Moved camp

I had already been feeling like I'd spent enough time at the lake side campsite so I took it as a sign that it was time to mosey when the rangers stopped by this morning and very nicely asked if I'd keep Jake on a leash. I know it's the rule in all the state parks but when I'm camped where there's no one else around then I let him run while I keep an eye on him. So now I'm back at the stellar and secluded boondocking site in Elephant Butte SP. It's amazing how quiet it is here, like anti-noise.

Doesn't it look like fun to be off leash? (taken this morning before the bust)

Ellen likes it, too

Another birthday has come and gone, thank goodness. It was not a great day but I did score a free breakfast at Denny's.

On Jake's last outs last night, just before full dark, I noticed there were about a dozen bats flying around the rig. Then when I walked around to the other side of the rig and looked out over the grassy areas opposite the lake, I saw what had to be hundreds of them flying this way and that. It was epic. I've never seen so many at one time.

  1. Not sure if you bats were much better that our termite invasion back in March. Off leash is great and we do the same with our girls.

Happy Birthday! A free breakfast is good.

    1. Thanks! Breakfast was good.

I'd say the bats were much better than your invasion, and they all stayed outside. :)

    1. Not at all, it was awesome. I stayed outside for a long time watching them, they posed no danger to me.

    1. Thanks! No, she didn't, but then she wasn't barking at them, either. :)

  5. Love the bats, they eat all the annoying bugs in the area.
    Too bad you got busted.

  6. Traveling with an outlaw....how exciting :-). Ellen likely denies knowing him. We had bats all summer and when there were lots of them it was an amazing site in the evening skies.

    1. Yeah, that Jake, what a rebel. :)

The bats are too cool, I hope I get to see a show again.

  7. You have never had a two year old loose in WalMart. LOL They can disappear in 1.5 seconds and only have two feet. Kidding but remember a big cat can take your dog way faster than you can call him back. Snakes......etc.

If we stumble on a cat big enough to take an 85 pound dog I don't see how a leash is going to make any difference.

I choose a life for me and for my animals that are free of fear. I could keep him and the cats inside and only take Jake out long enough to do his business and we'd all be terribly safe. Terribly unhappy and terribly bored but terribly safe. If, by letting them have some freedom to romp and run and enjoy themselves their lives are shortened, I think that's a fair trade and one they would choose. Same for me.
